Dress: Summer and Sage c/o Le Tote // Hat: Forever 21 // Scarf: Summer and Sage c/o Le Tote // Sneakers

Driving around in the Canyons has become our new favorite hobby since in not in hiking condition anymore.  It's so beautiful this time of year and there is so much to see every time we go somewhere new. The colors of the trees are changing and it's a pretty spectacular way to experience our first fall here in SLC. I can't wait till next fall when we can take Athena with us on foot for some hiking.

This dress and scarf are both from Le Tote, who I've been collaborating with through these last 3 months of my pregnancy and I have TONS to say on that topic. Full review coming soon, but right now there is a little lady kicking and squirming in my belly and I'm going to have to quit there. Man, these last few weeks are going to be hard to blog, but I'll do my best to keep bringing you fresh content.

The Story of Us

Friday, October 7, 2016

Since October the 8th is our 5th wedding anniversary, and our very last as just a family of two, I wanted to share our little story here before we are a family of three!

Andrew and I met in Washington, DC 16 years ago while I was out visiting my best friend who was attending George Washington University. Pretty much since then we were hooked on each other. The only problem was that he lived in Wisconsin and I lived in Chicago.

It's not what you may think. We didn't decide that one of us would just move to the other, and that was that. We were both just beginning to start our adult lives: Andrew with his political career that took him from Milwaukee's City Hall to jobs in the Capitol in Madison, and me with my desire to work with inner-city kids in the city of Chicago that I love so much. So we pursued our career dreams in separate states.

I think this is really the one thing that has helped us stay together for 16 years: We support one another in doing what makes the other happy, and trusted each other enough to let the other grow and explore opportunities that we might never get again. We grew up so much apart, but we always grew together and had one another for support the whole way through.

Was it hard? Sure, but we always knew it was worth it. Throughout all of our insane work hours and MANY jobs, often as many as 5 at a time (each of us), we made long distance work. Luckily Wisconsin isn't that far from Chicago, and Andrew would come in almost every weekend either by driving or Amtrak to Union Station which was conveniently just a few blocks from my apartment in Chicago!

We made it work long distance through college, professional life, and hectic work schedules for 10 years before we decided to get get engaged. I'd never been the kind of girl who dreamed about a big fancy wedding so we did it our way with only about 30 people, dinner at our favorite restaurant in the city and incorporating some of our favorite, most meaningful spots around our hood too.

Finally after 11 and a half years living apart (and six months after our wedding), Andrew moved to Chicago. People thought it would be weird for us to finally live together since we had become such independent people but it wasn't weird at all. After that long we really knew who we were and who the other person was as well. The skill we had developed of trying things on our own helped us so much to adjust to life together. We both knew how to act as independent people when we needed to. We also started trying out hobbies together which is where our love of yoga started. We even had a Yoga Sculpt wedding class taught by our friend Emily at the South Loop Core Power the night before the wedding!

We really hope that from our story, our daughter learns that life is meant to be explored. She can take a path that isn't the same as everyone else's and go against what everyone thinks she should do, and do what works for her. We hope that she learns to be kind and good to people along the way and keep an open mind for both people and opportunities. And to love and to trust with her whole heart if she finds someone she thinks is deserving, because if they are worth it, her life will be full, rich, and well-lived.

Chicago, wedding, hot pink, fall
We knew one thing for sure, we wanted a fall outdoor wedding because we like the chillier temps. Unfortunately Chicago gave us an 81 degree day and tons of sun, but at least it looked like fall in the pictures.

This bridge was part of the site of the World's Fair in 1893. The perfect place for a Chicago-loving person like myself to get married.

Chicago, wedding, hot pink, union station
Union Station was about 4 blocks from our apartment and it played a huge role in us being able to get to one another. We thought it would be fitting to take pictures here, at a place we had said goodbye so many times.

Because we are silly and it felt very political to take a picture in front of a flag in the train station for Andrew.

Chicago, wedding, hot pink
We stopped at Millennium Park to take a few pictures because this is where we first started doing yoga together. Saturday mornings we would walk down the street and take classes here on the lawn.

I had my heart set on taking a pic in the middle of Michigan Ave. I mean shopping is pretty much my favorite activity and I'd spent enough time on the Mag Mile in my 15 years of living downtown to consider it a pretty important place in my life. Andrew probably could have done without it since he does not share my passion for shopping.

And this one is just who we are and will always be together. Two goof balls who really enjoy one another.

Dress: Aritzia // Shoes: Topshop // Hat: Urban Outfitters ((old but similar  here and here // Necklace & Bracelet: Park Lane c/o

Due date: November 7th
Baby's Gender: Girl
Name: Athena

How are you feeling? Still sick and nauseous and on meds. It really makes me look forward to labor because at least with that I know it will end this. Baby girl, you wanna come early? Let's do this! I've got clothes, a nursery and everything you could need, all set up and ready to go!

How is baby? She is ACTIVE! At all my doctors appointments we hear nothing but good news about how she's doing so I can't complain too much. Her favorite activities consist of kicking me in the ribs when I wear pants, a bra, or sit. Anything that compromises her space she is not a fan of and has no problem letting me know. She also enjoys kicking me in my already nauseous and upset stomach. Good times.

What are you excited about? FALL! For some glorious reason, when the temps drop a little, I feel less nauseous which is a major bonus! How nice will it be to have a fall/ winter baby? I'm excited to hang out in cozy pj's and snuggle all day. Also since this is my husbands busy season at work and pretty much always will be, I have realized that both Athena and my birthdays will be around two weeks apart, so I am looking forward to having a partner to take mother daughter trips with while daddy is busy with work! How cool will that be?

How is the nursery coming along? It's done and has been for a few weeks now.  You can see the reveal here! We really love how it turned out. Currently we are working on her playroom, that already in my mind that looks great, but it will be slow progress since I can't paint of move heavy furniture.

Do you feel ready? I think so. I mean of course an newborn will throw us for some loops but I have all the basics she will need. The Mamaroo is all set up, I've taken lactation classes through the fabulous Lactation Link and have their videos on hand in case I need a memory refresh. We have interviewed and found our pediatrician. We even got our flu shots and whatever other vaccinations I needed.

I have a few things still in the works that I would like done, like her bathtub shower head needs to be switched to a hose for easy baby hose downs! The banister on the stairway to her room is also being installed in the upcoming week. This one is important to me because late night feedings may lead to some late night tripping on the stairs and I want to make sure the hand rail is ready. It's pretty weird that the house didn't come with one but we have survived so far. It will just give me peace of mind when it's there.

I it will be awhile before she needs a playroom but I have the whole plan set up and I think the way I have it planned, it will also make a nice guest room area too, so we want to get that done ASAP.

Any weird pregnancy symptoms? I can't believe how much things make me cry! I AM NOT a crier. When you grow up with boys like the ones in my family, tears are a sign of weakness and you learn not to show them, because they accomplish nothing. But lately if I talk about my old students, listen to a podcast, or think of something small, I can get teary. I definitely wasn't like this in my first trimester when I expected to be, but now at the end of my 3rd, I'm kind of a mess. I think the hormones and the culmination of it all is wearing on my nerves. I dare you not to cry after feeling like you've had the stomach flu for 8 months!

Plans/Trips before baby? This weekend we are going to stay at our favorite hotel in Deer Valley, the Hyatt Escala for our babymoon, anniversary, and my birthday trip all rolled into one. We have stayed there twice before and have always had such great experiences. I can't wait for some much needed soaking in the year-round heated pool, and then some more soaking in the deep jacuzzi tubs followed by some time chilling near the in-room fireplaces! YES!

Nursery Reveal

Friday, September 30, 2016

I'm so excited to finally share our nursery with you today. It's quickly turned into one of our favorite rooms in our house and in true "Jill" form it was done pretty much weeks ago! It may have been done even faster if I was able to paint, but I had to have Andrew do the tedious job all on his own.

When I say tedious, I'm talking about the mountains. This room started off a boring shade of beige and I had the grand idea of painting huge wrap-around mountains on the walls in non-girly shades. We needed three shades of gray to complete the mountains and I love the way it turned out. (Even if it was a huge pain in the butt.) I taped off the design and Andrew filled it in. The project was kind of like a giant paint-by-number. In the end it is the perfect subtle kick for the room.

We really wanted a theme that meant something to us, and really, why else did we move to Utah if it wasn't for the beautiful mountains? So we really liked bringing that idea into the nursery.

Ive said it before, but every one of my design ideas starts with one inspiration piece. This time around it was this Milk blanket by Spearmint Love. I was obsessed with it long before I was pregnant and told myself even if I'm having a girl I'm buying this blue blanket. It also comes in pink so if that's more your speed, you can get it here. What a cute baby gift it would make!

I love to come hang out down here and turn on her white noise machine and diffuser with the softest little night light on the bottom. Perfect relaxation space.

I feel like all I see is white cribs so I wanted to go for something a little bolder and not so all together girly. This dark gray one was perfect for the room.

These two little pieces of furniture were our old entertainment center in Chicago. My girlfriend Brittany turned me on to this Valspar Furniture paint that required no sanding at all and we painted them both to match the walls. Funny detail about these pieces is that they are from an old used hotel furniture store in Chicago, but they are old mini-bar holders. They have a ton of storage space inside. currently they are filled with diapers and wipes.

I found these cute little hooks at Anthropologie on sale, all we had to do was paint the heart in the middle for a sweet little DIY storage spot.

So how perfect was it that this wall had built-in shelving when we moved into the house? It made the decision of where to put the changing table a no-brainer. I got the gray baskets from At Home.

One of my favorite touches in this room is the super special little bookshelf that my Father-in-Law made. It has all of Andrew's siblings' initials carved into the side. I just love things like that, when furniture has meaning behind it.

I hope you liked the nursery. Let me know if you would be interested in seeing the step-by-step process of getting the mountains on the wall. I took pictures and video all the way through.

Also special thanks to my awesome friend Sandy who took these pictures. They are so special to me.

Maternity Photos

Monday, September 26, 2016

These pictures are more like a Facebook album in quantity, so my apologies in advance, but it was really hard decide which ones to share. Obviously these are my favorites so I hope it's not too much of an overload. And if you get bored of looking at us goofs and my big ol' belly, check out that scenery!! Our friend Octavia who is an absolutely amazing photographer,  knew all the right little spots to take us up to at Sundance Mountain Resort in Provo. The leaves had just started to change so it was pretty spectacular. Andrew loves Aspen trees so this first location made him super happy. I'm just glad she was able to capture who we really are together. We are silly and don't take ourselves too seriously. We are so excited to be bringing a baby girl into our goofy little family soon. Enjoy.

Huge thanks go out to Octavia for capturing such special moments that we will cherish forever.  And if you are interested in booking a session with her, she is offering a great discount for all of my readers, $100 off a $250 couples or family session making it a steal at $150. She is fast, friendly and super talented, so don't miss this chance, Utah friends! The holidays are coming up fast so what better time is there than now? Email her at octaviakathryn@gmail.com to book.
